Farmers beware when letting cottages to employees!

29th June 2012

When letting farm cottages to employees, farmers are unwittingly giving their employees greater security than they need to. This can then lead to difficulties obtaining possession when the tenancy expires.

Tenancies of farm cottages to agricultural employees have special status as ‘assured agricultural occupancies’. To avoid this landlords simply need to serve a notice on the tenant before the tenancy commences. To be effective the notice must be in a particular form and give the prescribed information as required by law.
