31 May saw another successful and adrenalin filled 5th annual Ansons Rugeley 7s competition. 12 teams took part in the tournament at Rugeley Rugby Club, which was sponsored for the third year in a row by Ansons Solicitors.
The local area was well represented, with teams from Cannock Chase, Stafford, Barton under Needwood and Telford all taking part. Even sides from Birmingham and as far afield as Jersey joined the competition.
Associate solicitor at Ansons and head of personal injury Adam Penn was there to supervise the action. He said “We are delighted to be able to associated with such a fantastic tournament. Ansons has a long association with Rugeley Rugby Club and it is wonderful to see how the competition has grown over the years. We feel it is important for local businesses to support sports clubs in their communities.”
The tournament got off to a storming start and did not disappoint up to the final match. Highlights included a swift Telford winger ignoring the score line, nimbly dodging his way through the Birmingham Colleges side defence, to score one of the best tries of the day. The semi-finals also saw a game of wills between Barton under Needwood and the Colleges, winning the Birmingham Colleges a final place in extra time.
In the end the Colleges overcame Eccleshall 33-0 to take the cup back to Birmingham, with Rugeley winning the plate competition after claiming victory over Cannock, and Stafford securing the beer cup.
Carl Johnson, the Rugeley rugby club chairman, said “I am delighted with the success of the tournament which has grown to be the blue ribboned competition in the Staffordshire 7s series. I wish to extend thanks to Ansons Solicitors for their continued support and assistance. We hope the participants enjoyed themselves and will be back again in 2015.”
Ansons Solicitors extend their congratulations to the winners and thank everyone for taking part.
